On Jun. 4, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission approved an amendment for local ordinance Sec. 3-5-36. The Amendment allows for officers to issue citations rather than detaining individuals. Violations such as disorderly conduct, intoxication, illegal parking, illegally placed trash receptacles, and other low-level crimes are examples of crimes now served through a citation upon first notice.

KEBA Sandwiches, a local Athens restaurant chain, closed its final two locations on Oct. 20, 2019. Partial-owner Paul Witman said he thinks they closed because they lacked brand awareness.

Nearly $135 million was spent on lobbying efforts for the United States agribusiness industry in 2018, according to The Center for Responsive Politics. Less than one percent of that amount—approximately $1.73 million—was spent specifically on poultry lobbying.

Every Tuesday since April 2, 2019, Athens vendors from all walks of life set up shop at The Culinary Kitchen of Athens’s Downtown Culinary Showcase. It features new and established vendors alike, none of which have permanent brick and mortar stores. Many vendors are looking for ways to expand their businesses, and similar to other businesses, increase their revenues.

"Approximately 300 tons of material is disposed of in the Athens-Clarke County Landfill daily. The average dump truck holds 12 to 14 tons of waste, so approximately 23 dump truck loads of garbage are dumped into the 289-acre landfill per day. Yet, not all of it should be garbage."
